OpenAI unveils GPT-4, a new foundation for ChatGPT

GPT3 was introduced in November 2022 and gained over one million users within a week. It is currently in a research preview phase that allows individuals and businesses to use it at no charge. We’ve also taken technical measures to significantly limit ChatGPT’s ability to analyze and make direct statements about people since ChatGPT is not always accurate and these systems should respect individuals’ privacy. We’re rolling out voice and images in ChatGPT to Plus and Enterprise users over the next two weeks.

OpenAI has suggested in the past that GPT-4.5 could be finished training and ready to go by September or October of this year. ChatGPT has high running costs — for hosting, upkeep, upgrading hardware, updates, satisfying its investor, etc. — while its own popularity has led to an immediate need to improve its accessibility and speed to a greater user base. Some estimates peg daily running costs at $100,000, or up to $3 million a month! Integrating fact-checking capabilities could also enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of the information generated by the model. These efforts will help ensure that AI-generated content is more representative, inclusive, and less prone to perpetuating harmful stereotypes or discrimination. Developers plan to continue to focus on reducing bias and promoting fairness in ChatGPT’s outputs by refining the training process, data curation, and model evaluation.

What are its limitations?

I tried probing it about details I knew from Italian news sources, as the replies kept mentioning only sources in English, like Wikipedia and English-language news reports. One of those details was the name of the bus driver, who passed away in the accident. This had already been reported in Italian newspapers, but ChatGPT said it had not yet been released, citing another English language source and advising me to follow local news outlets or official statements for updates. In a separate conversation, I asked ChatGPT in Italian about Kevin McCarthy’s ousting as a speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and it responded in English and drawing from English-language sources even though the event had already been widely reported in Italian newspapers. It’s difficult to say without more information about what the code is supposed to do and what’s happening when it’s executed. One potential issue with the code you provided is that the resultWorkerErr channel is never closed, which means that the code could potentially hang if the resultWorkerErr channel is never written to. This could happen if b.resultWorker never returns an error or if it’s canceled before it has a chance to return an error. Just hours after its release, several users said they created computer games in less than a minute by simply asking the chatbot to generate code, resulting in near-perfect renditions of Tetris, Connect Four, Snake, and Pong. Other users created a matchmaking service, bedtime stories, a browser extension that translates any webpage into “pirate speak,” and even a tool that can help discover new medications. Even when asked leading questions about blame, ChatGPT refrained from answering them directly and instead explained arguments from a variety of viewpoints from an impartial position. A couple of days later, I tried again with another high-profile breaking news story in the U.K., the Prime Minister’s announcement of the cuts to the HS2 high-speed rail project. In this case, ChatGPT’s answer was immediately correct and up to date — within five minutes of the BBC app notification. It also linked to a live blog as a source, which it had not done for the story of the school bus crash.

This is an area where Bing Chat shines because Bing, unlike ChatGPT, includes search engine results. If you’re using ChatGPT to come up with facts, make sure you cross-check the information provided. Its knowledge base is also limited by the text data it has been trained on, which may not cover every topic or domain comprehensively.

How diverse are ChatGPT’s responses in terms of language and geography?

During customer service and business interactions, GPT chat is popular in Japan. Businesses use GPT chat to interact with their customers in a more efficient and cost-effective manner in China. Earlier versions of ChatGPT are only efficient in recognizing and understanding the text,  but with the new version, users will be able to generate content through images too.

As a result, information gaps are sometimes visible, and many recent events aren’t reflected in ChatGPT. The system also lacks information about certain people, including celebrities. Fueled by AI, ChatGPT pushes natural language processing to a new level. It generates machine text that looks like something a human would write. Plus and Enterprise users will get to experience voice and images in the next two weeks.

Moreover, users will have ease of producing content of their own style as ChatGPT can recognize and understand users’ writing styles. GPT-4 makes communicating effortless and intuitive with its user-friendly design. Then I asked ChatGPT about the war in Ukraine to know how it would respond to questions about a long-running, complex, sensitive news story. I asked the chatbot what the latest news from the war was and it gave me a few points from the Ukraine Sky News live blog. These were accurate but lacked any context, as the only source was a page with very short posts. The public broadcaster’s mobile phone app was sending out notifications with key updates too. Third-party companies have been able to access these models to build their own apps and offerings powered by OpenAI’s tech, some of which offered PDF and document analysis.
